Resident Evil 5 Reviews - Xbox 360
Video Game Reviews - See what others are saying about Resident Evil 5 before you buy!Resident Evil 5 reviews are coming in by the fistful for the Xbox 360 and PS2 systems. Critics give it about a 90%, with a video game review rating of 8.5 out of 10 for Gamespot, 9.0 out of 10 for IGN and 4.5 stars out of 5 from Gamespy. That’s pretty impressive overall.
User reviews are a bit more mixed, but Gamefly’s users give Resident Evil 5 a score of 8.3 out of 10, with 260 game reviews on their site already. Amazon users rate RE5 at 3.5 stars out of 5, with 76 of the 117 reviews being at a 4 or 5 start rating.
To save you time going through about 370 game reviews, we’ve summarized the major ‘pros’ and ‘cons’ here. Since some simply do not like the changes made in version 5, if there are any doubts the new release will be a keeper for your game collection, then we recommend game rental before deciding anything.
- Amazing Graphics. Sharp, detailed and the lighting makes RE5 about as lifelike as you’ll find. Close to HD quality, where the level of realism simply immerses you in the game.
- Super Sound Track – Excellent is about the only word for it!
- Characters Are Extremely Lifelike, especially facial expressions, and hit detection is superb.
- Resident Evil 5's New Focus is Co-Op Play. You have to strategize who gets what weapon, ammo and herbs, as well as how to approach each situation. It’ simply awesome with a friend as your partner in multiplayer mode.
- RE5’s Inventory Management is More Realistic. It doesn 't take you out of the game now, and the new D-pad fianlly allows on-the-fly inventory swaps. This new feature is greatly appreciated by many.
- Weapon Upgrades Are Back! Unlimited ammo can be achieved during game play and with upgrades, you’ll turn these bad boys into super killing machines!
- Combat is King this time, and there are no safe havens! It’s intense and action packed from the start.
Resident Evil 5 Reviews - Con's
- Cut Scenes turn up the contrast and brightness a bit more than needed.
- Controls are pretty much like RE4's - it takes some getting use to. Some even called them clunky.
- No complaints with graphics quality, but lots in the area of movement. Developers purposely kept the old method, but many would prefer to shoot or knife while on the move. It would be also be great to just walk up and punch or kick the enemy without having to stun them first.
- Sounds Aren't Creepy like Resident Evil 1, 2 and 3.
- Multi players would like to Pass Weapons to a partner
- AI mode players would like To Position Sheva, especially toward the end of the game. Several also want her to use the big weapons more.
- Inventory Was Too Limited, and several felt trading and stacking was cumbersome.
- Die-hard RE1 2 3 fans want the horror back. (But many also agree multiplayer is a BIG plus).
Most agree that the horror theme of RE 1,2 and 3 is no longer present (and some are downright upset about it), but the action is almost nonstop. The creepiness of being all alone, pitch black and only 2 bullets left has now been replaced with a focus on co-op play, fabulous graphics, a great sound track and scads of enemies at just about every turn. And that’s in bright sunshine or the deepest of dark. But it is definitely a departure from the original game series.
For most, each level is laid out nicely, the game pace is just right and every level entices you to move to the next area. You’re promised more infested ambushes and attacks with tons of enemy at every turn. Most also agree that RE5 is best when played online or with a partner in Xbox 360 split screen mode, but it’s still great fun with the screen all to yourself and AI controlling Sheva.
Replay was also programmed in from the start as you get to keep your weapons upgrades, treasures and BSAA emblems from one game to the next. Even if you were able to find them all the first time through, it’s still worth a replay as Chris with unlimited ammo.
Once you win as Chris Redfield, you can also choose to be Sheva Alomar the next time, or pick the mercenary mode to revert to a more traditional Resident Evil game if prefered.
With 9.0 out of 10, 8.5 out of 10 and 4.5 stars out of 5 from the major critics, plus 8.3 of 10 for Gamefly and 3.5 stars of 5 for Amazon users, it's pretty safe to say most like the game quite a bit. But there are certainly those who do not appreciate the changes and a few others that even refuse to play the game at all. So once again, if you're an avid RE1, 2 or 3 player, we recommend
game rental before even thinking about buying it.
Resident Evil 5 Setting and Story line
If you noticed, we did not comment on the story line above. That's because it doesn't really depart from the original series. Same B movie style narration and voices that range from squaking to silly, but that's a part of the original series that didn't change.
Most think Resident Evil 5 is a thrilling addition to the continuing game series. It picks up about 10 years after the events of the original game and centers on getting the Umbrella Corp’s bio-weapons out of the hands of terrorist leaders. The story fills the time gap through Chris Redfield’s life, where he’s part of the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance. As you play along, he's sent to investigate the threat of a bio-organic weapon in the deserts of Africa. He meets up with Sheva Alomar there, and because of a need now for teamwork, their relationship actually changes how you play the game.
Chris and Sheva set out to stop Ricardo Irving from selling Umbrella Corporation’s bio-weapon on the black market, but soon find that most of the locals have been turned into Majini. That’s a nasty zombie state brought on by ingesting a sick looking parasite. Once that happens, none of them are the least friendly. Chris and Sheva have to fight their way through these flesh-eating creatures at just about every turn. Wait … was that something moving, or just my imagination? You’ll love the new graphics and light effects – and you’ll be glad you have a partner!
The game continues as they find Captain DeChant, the only survivor of Alpha team. He helps them get info on Irving, which sends them on a journey filled with crashes and Majini ambushes that are simply chilling zombie attacks. Find and loose Irving, discover a weapons test location, battle a huge beast that turns out to be Irving, this time after he injects himself with a virus. Find an underground kingdom, discover where the Progenitor virus laboratory is, and also all the encapsulated human test subjects used to perfect it … and it just keeps getting better.
Check the game out before renting? You can do that. Gamefly provides excellent game guides with screen shots, video clips and even "how to" information on controller ops.
Stuck on a level? Figuring out what to do next is where fun and challenge meet head to head. But if you can't get past something ... well that's no fun at all. Gamefly even provides game cheats to help you win at that part too.
